California State University, Fullerton
This facility includes 4 performance venues; the 800-seat Meng Concert Hall, 250 seat thrust Young Theatre, 150-seat black box Hallberg Theatre and the 50-seat McGarvey Family Dance Studio. The new facility includes a series of warm-up, practice and dressing rooms, a recording studio, a musical theatre rehearsal hall, 2 state-of-art dance studios, a new costume shop, light lab and scene shop, along with faculty offices and classrooms. The new facility has been connected to the existing structure which also hosts 3 performance venues.
Landry & Bogan, Inc. provided full theatrical consulting services, from programming through construction, including stage lighting systems for 5 venues, lighting and effects equipment specification, design of the rigging for the concert hall acoustical canopy and variable acoustics systems, general consultation on layout and design of production and performer support spaces and lighting positions.
In the heart of the Southern California entertainment community, this project exemplifies the best in an integrated, interdisciplinary performance facility encompassing appropriate, state-of-the-art accommodations for music, dance and theater under one roof. Prior to the development of this new facility, the university had difficulties, within their existing building, in serving the sometimes opposing needs of the various performing arts programs. However, they were very much committed to an interdisciplinary approach to performing arts education.
Their music department competed for appropriate space with dance and theater, while their growing and accomplished musical theater program was bursting at the seams and lacking appropriate rehearsal space, and their extensive dance program was sometimes forced to rehearse outside due to lack of dance rehearsal space of sufficient height for lifts! The new building provided their music department with a dedicated performance venue, while keeping the program in close proximity to the same production support facilities which serve theatre and dance. The theatre department now has 2 new, versatile performance spaces, the musical theater program gained a dedicated rehearsal space and the dance department gained 3 appropriately sized studios. Design and audio programs gained exceptional light lab, CADD design lab and recording lab facilities as well. So, all disciplines have been well served and this expanding program can continue to develop professionals for the growing entertainment market.
